Most African women face a variety of legal, economic and social constraints. Most are still regarded as second-class citizens hence little or no attention is given to them when it comes to empowerment. It is for this reason that Access Bank, having identified the importance of female empowerment and the challenges faced by women in Nigeria, launched its "W" Initiative on July 11, 2014 - to change the story of the female folk. It has been one year since that historical day, and celebrating the first year anniversary of the 'W' Initiative goes beyond marking the date - July 11. One year of 'W' has been about charting new paths for African women - irrespective of their age, occupation or class; encouraging a new culture of dialogue; and celebrating the achievements of women across the continent. Through periodic dialogue sessions and training events, women have expressed themselves and connected with other women with similar visions.
The event, 'Breakfast with W', has seen women across fashion, health and other industries speak up about their challenges in an open and honest environment. The online W community provides useful tips and information around nine broad areas - Business, Career, Food, Family, Health, Leading Women, Lifestyle, Personal Finance, Love and Relationship. Several women are leveraging this platform to promote their business, network and improve their personal lives. Through the Maternal Health Service Support (MHSS), Walso recently celebrated the birth of the scheme's first baby.
Furthermore, Access Bank believes firmly in living out the values they profess by setting a standard for others to follow. The bank remains dedicated to empowering women within the organization, providing a dedicated mentorship program and grantingfemale employees access to new healthcare, education and childcare facilities. The Bank has also forged viable alliances with global women organisations including International Finance Corporation (IFC), Weconnect International, Cherie Blaire Foundation and Global Banking Alliance for Women.
In the coming months, the 'W' Initiative will launch the 'Women, Let's Save' campaign to encourage financial discipline amongst women and also roll-out series of capacity building sessions and other value-added services aimed at inspiring, connecting and empowering
